InformationPhotographer and filmmaker · Philadelphia
Daniel Traub is a photographer and filmmaker based in Philadelphia, the city where he grew up. He lived in China from 1998 to 2007, and much of his work since has been made where cultures and economies meet: the unsettled edges of Beijing and Shanghai, a pedestrian bridge in Guangzhou where African traders and Chinese street photographers crossed paths, the Palestinian city of Nablus, and the streets of North Philadelphia. Plexiglass Arches and Plastic Flowers (2020–) studies the Chinese takeout restaurant in Philadelphia as an architecture of encounter.

Alongside his own photographs, Traub has long worked with images made by others. Little North Road (Kehrer Verlag, 2015) brought his pictures together with an archive of portraits by two itinerant photographers on the Guangzhou bridge. Recent projects extend that interest to images produced by commercial and digital systems: After-Images (2022–23), made with an AI image generator, and Ten Thousand Things (2026–), which re-edits demonstration videos from Chinese manufacturing and sales platforms.

His books include North Philadelphia (Kehrer Verlag, 2014) and Little North Road, shortlisted for the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Award; a book of his Beijing photographs is in development. His work has been exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Breda Photo Festival, the Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt and the Shanghai Center of Photography, among others, and is held in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

His documentaries include Ursula von Rydingsvard: Into Her Own (2019), The Barefoot Artist (2014) and Xu Bing: Phoenix (2013). Through Itinerant Pictures, he also makes commissioned films and photographs for museums, cultural institutions, architects and designers.

Traub is the son of the architect David S. Traub and the artist Lily Yeh.

About this site

This site was rebuilt in 2026 to mark thirty years of work, 1996–2026. It is both a portfolio and a working archive: personal projects, films, books and commissioned work, gathered in one place, dated, and listed with exhibition and publication details where they exist.

It is an ongoing project. Earlier work, including photographs from the 1980s, is still being added, and corrections are welcome at studio@danieltraub.net.
