Biography

Daniel Traub is a photographer, filmmaker, and visual artist whose work explores how historical and geopolitical tensions manifest in the urban landscape. His photographic projects often focus on the peripheries and in-between spaces of cities around the world.

Traub's projects include Little North Road, documenting the dynamic activities on a pedestrian bridge in Guangzhou, China; Nablus, a study of the West Bank Palestinian town; and North Philadelphia, a body of work examining the largely African American section of Philadelphia. His work reveals the social, cultural, and architectural layers that shape urban environments.

He has published two monographs with Kehrer Verlag: North Philadelphia and Little North Road. Currently, he is collaborating with editor Robert Pledge on a book compiling photographs from his time living and working in China between 1998 and 2007.

Traub's photographs have been exhibited internationally, including solo and group shows at the Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago, Slought Foundation in Philadelphia, the Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt, and the Shanghai Center for Photography (SCoP). His work is held in public collections such as the Margulies Collection at the WAREhOUSE, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

As a filmmaker, Traub has directed and produced both short and feature-length documentaries that explore the impact of societal and familial tensions on individuals. His films include Into Her Own, a biography of artist Ursula von Rydingsvard; Xu Bing: Phoenix, following the creation of monumental sculptures from Beijing construction debris; and Barefoot Artist, chronicling the collaborative art projects of his mother, Lily Yeh, in marginalized communities.

Traub's work has also extended to commissions for leading publications and media organizations. As a photographer, he has contributed to Time, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, and M, le magazine du Monde. As a filmmaker and cinematographer, his collaborations include PBS, ZDF, and Arte, along with recent commissions for various arts and cultural institutions.
